Developer Shane McCafferty has shared a new update on OutRun GB, a fan project recreating Sega’s classic racer for the Game Boy Color.
The big highlight of this update is the addition of the iconic track “Magical Sound Shower”, faithfully recreated for the handheld. The music was handled by Sloopygoop, who has delivered an authentic chiptune rendition of one of gaming’s most recognizable soundtracks.
Magical Sound Shower is one of my favorite video game soundtracks of all time, and this Game Boy demake did it more than justice. Hearing it adapted so well for the GBC makes this project feel even more special.
OutRun GB continues to impress with its blend of colorful pixel art, smooth scaling effects, and faithful recreation of the original arcade feel, all running within the limitations of Nintendo’s handheld.
While still a work in progress, the project has been drawing attention from retro gaming fans and indie developers alike for its dedication to bringing OutRun to a system it never officially appeared on.
