Mario Kart 64 for Dreamcast – Now Available

Dreamcast Games Romhacks

A fan project has brought Mario Kart 64 to the Sega Dreamcast, using the official decompilation of the Nintendo 64 classic as its base. Built with the KallistiOS toolchain, this port runs natively on Dreamcast hardware and includes working VMU save support for both race records and time trial ghosts.

The Dreamcast version retains the original game’s visuals and performance, with optimized audio thanks to contributions from several developers in the Dreamcast homebrew scene. Controls are fixed and mapped to the Dreamcast’s layout, with both analog stick and D-pad supported.

While the project’s GitHub page provides detailed build instructions, users will need to supply their own legally-obtained Mario Kart 64 ROM. The creator does not distribute disc images, but a CDI can be generated from the source for use on real Dreamcast hardware.

This release follows in the footsteps of other high-profile decompilation ports, showing once again how classic games can find new life on unexpected platforms.
