Chrono Trigger Retranslation v1.12 – A Smoother, More Faithful Script

SNES Games Romhacks

A new version of the Chrono Trigger retranslation patch has been released, incorporating kWhazit’s updated script along with fixes for remaining issues from the older Kajar Laboratories patch.

While the original retranslation aimed for literal accuracy, it often read awkwardly in English. Later addendum patches improved flow but blended multiple translations, losing some consistency. This update keeps the Japanese terminology intact, offers a smoother reading experience, and maintains a more literal approach than official releases, while still being easy to follow.

Compared to the official English version, this patch:

  • Uses more direct translations of character and place names
  • Retains original Japanese terminology and cultural references
  • Preserves dialogue nuances altered or omitted in official localizations
  • Avoids censorship changes present in the official translation
  • Uses phrasing closer to the Japanese script while improving readability

The patch also includes numerous bug fixes and an optional version with small gameplay tweaks.
Version 1.12 specifically addresses a minor “Spacetime Shift” text issue during the final battle.
