OutRun GB – Out Today! – Game Review

Game Boy Color Games Reviews

The Game Boy Color didn’t see many true arcade-style racing experiences, which makes OutRun GB stand out even more. This fan-made take on Sega’s iconic racer delivers a surprisingly authentic and fun experience that feels right at home on Nintendo’s handheld.

Gameplay and Visuals

Developed in GB Studio by EGVroom (Shane MᶜCafferty), OutRun GB immediately impresses with how smooth and responsive it feels. The sense of speed is there, and the colorful visuals make excellent use of the Game Boy Color’s palette to recreate the arcade vibes in a way that’s bright and clear without sacrificing performance. It’s surprisingly immersive for an 8-bit racer.

Music and Atmosphere

One of the game’s biggest highlights is the soundtrack. The music is not only instantly recognizable but also incredibly faithful to the original Sega arcade experience. It’s the kind of soundtrack that keeps you tapping your foot as you race down each track, perfectly complementing the high-speed gameplay.

My Take

OutRun GB is one of those rare handheld projects that nails the feel of its source material. I love the way it looks and plays, and the music is just the cherry on top. Honestly, it feels like it could have been made by Sega themselves, and that’s about the highest compliment you can give a Game Boy Color racer.
