LEGO is teaming up with Sega once again, this time with a clever build aimed at retro gaming fans. The new LEGO Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) Controller set (40769) will not be sold at retail but instead offered as a Gift With Purchase (GWP) starting on September 8, 2025.
A Nostalgic Build
The set contains 260 pieces and recreates the iconic 3-button controller that defined Sega’s 16-bit era. To make it even more authentic, LEGO includes stickers so you can choose between “Genesis” or “Mega Drive” branding, depending on which version you grew up with.
On the surface, it looks like a straightforward replica for display, but flip it around and you’ll uncover a hidden Green Hill Zone micro-scene complete with Sonic, rings, and scenery details. It’s a fun Easter egg that adds extra charm for longtime Sega fans.
How to Get It
Since this is a Gift With Purchase, you won’t find it sitting on store shelves. Instead, it will be available for free when you spend around $130 / £110 / €130 on LEGO products during the promotion period. With a value estimated at $19.99 / £16.99 / €19.99, it’s a nice bonus for collectors who were already planning a purchase. The promotion will only run for a limited time and while supplies last, so fans will need to act quickly if they want to secure one.
A Collectible for Sega and Lego Fans
The LEGO Sega Genesis / Mega Drive Controller is a perfect complement to the Sonic the Hedgehog sets LEGO has released in recent years, and it highlights how deeply LEGO has been leaning into gaming culture. While some fans have noted that the design looks a bit blocky compared to the real controller, the mix of nostalgia, display potential, and the hidden Green Hill Zone makes this one of the more creative LEGO GWPs in recent memory.
Personally, I think this one should have been available for direct purchase rather than locked behind a spending threshold. The appeal is strong enough that many Sega fans would gladly buy it outright, and it feels like a missed opportunity not to make it widely accessible.
Yeah i mentioned this on Discord. Nice though.
