Update 04-10-25:

A detailed feature from The Memory Core has shed new light on iiSU’s ambitious vision for the future of handheld emulation. Creator Eddie Collazo (also known as iShade from the UsagiShade channel) shared how the project evolved from YouTube mockups into a full-fledged, console-inspired Android front-end.

iiSU isn’t aiming to be “just another launcher.” Instead, it’s designed to recreate the feeling of classic handhelds like the PSP and 3DS, minimal UI, curated icons, and a focus on playing games, not scrolling through massive ROM lists.

Collazo has built a small but talented team, including composer Thaddeus Silva and co-designer Nathan “Elder Monkey” Lohnes, with SapphireRhodonite (known for emulator forks like MelonDS and Cemu dual-screen builds) leading development. Early Patreon builds are already rolling out, with a public test expected later this year and a full release now targeted for Spring 2026.

The developers confirmed plans for RetroAchievements integration, social features inspired by StreetPass and Miiverse, and even collaboration with PictoVerse to bring community interaction directly into iiSU. The app will feature both free and premium tiers, though pricing hasn’t been finalized.

Collazo emphasized that the team is funding the project independently, ensuring every contributor is compensated

iiSU’s explosive growth, from a seven-member Discord to thousands of followers in days, shows just how much appetite there is for a truly next-generation emulation experience on Android.

A brand-new emulation front-end called iiSU has just been announced, and it’s being developed specifically with the Android handheld community in mind. Designed for devices like the AYN Odin and Retroid Pocket series, iiSU aims to take full advantage of Android features, with no plans for Windows or Linux support.

Currently in the UI/UX design phase, a functional skeleton app already exists while the team finalizes layouts, icons, and design language. From the start, iiSU is being built with controller-first navigation, though touchscreen controls will also be supported. A separate dual-screen version is in development too, targeting upcoming handhelds such as the AYN Thor.

Customization will be a major focus, with options for light/dark modes, wallpapers, themes, menu music, and even editable home screens with widgets. Players will also be able to create their own custom game categories, such as a personal Mario or Sonic collection.

iiSU will offer a free core version that includes all essentials like ROM management and social features. A one-time premium upgrade will unlock advanced customization, additional home screens, and expanded online functionality.

The project is still early, but the developers are committed to making it a reality and are actively looking for experienced Android developers to join. With its dual-screen ambitions and heavy focus on customization, iiSU could quickly become one of the most interesting front-ends to watch in the Android handheld scene.

    1. Fortunately, you’re incorrect. Development has already begun according to their discord. They’ve been providing updates biweekly.
