Engineer Turns LEGO Gameboy Screen into a Real Display

Hardware Mods Game Boy

One of my favourite YouTube channels is “there oughta be“, as they are always showcasing cool stuff when it comes to the Game Boy, especially the DMG (the original model), which is my personal favourite.

Sebastian, the guy behind the channel, is the one who got GTA V working on the GB via a custom-designed device. Now he’s added a working display to the LEGO Game Boy, and it truly does rock!

I recommend watching the video. Below are some key points from his recent video:

  • Project Goal: To replace the LEGO Game Boy set’s (72046) static lenticular screen with a functional, backlit LCD display.
  • Display Used: A 2-inch LCD display module that fits the 6×6 LEGO window.
  • Electronics: A compact RP2350 microcontroller was used to drive the display.
  • Custom Fitting: A 3D printed adapter was created to ensure the display fits neatly into the LEGO brick frame; black cardboard is suggested as an alternative.
  • Functionality: The display runs a modified Game Boy emulator (Pan GB base emulator fork), allowing games to appear on the screen.
  • Potential for Future Mods: It is possible, though difficult, to make the device fully playable by adding working button inputs and a battery.
  • Resources: Details, links to parts, and 3D printing files are available on Sebastian’s blog.
