Metal Gear Solid in DuckStation: From 240p to HD with Texture Packs

Emulators Games PS1

DuckStation, a popular PlayStation emulator, allows players to experience classic games with enhanced visuals. Metal Gear Solid, originally released in 240p, can be upscaled and modified for modern displays.

Vanilla Experience

The game was first played in its original resolution of 240p without enhancements. This version preserves the authentic look and feel of the original PlayStation release.

Enhanced Mode

The same game was then played at 1080p with features such as geometry correction, widescreen support, and HD texture packs. These enhancements improve clarity, adjust perspective, and modernize the visual presentation. AI-upscaled textures were also used. While these cleaned up the image significantly, they can appear a bit odd in some situations.

Comparison Results

The screenshots below highlight the difference between the original and enhanced modes. The visual upgrade offers a sharper, more immersive experience while retaining the essence of the classic.

HD Texture Packs

Not many PS1 games have HD texture packs at the moment, but the community is actively working to create more. These projects aim to bring a fresh look to classic titles while preserving their original atmosphere (for the most part).
