Before the Xbox became the green and black plastic console we all know, Microsoft’s early prototype looked completely different. The first design was a massive X shaped block of solid aluminum, more like a sci-fi sculpture than a gaming machine. Built to impress at trade shows, it was never meant for production, mainly due to its astronomical cost and impractical design. Only a handful of these units were ever made, and most remain locked away in archives or private collections.
In his latest video, Macho Nacho Productions takes on the challenge of recreating this legendary prototype from scratch. The build was carried out by a “Prototype Dream Team”: Wesk handled the aluminum case modelling and machining, Redherring32 created a custom USB-C power supply to replace the original brick, and StuckPixel developed a bespoke boot animation for the jewel display on the shell. Using real Xbox hardware and precision machined aluminum, they bring the long-lost design back to life in stunning detail. It’s a fascinating blend of nostalgia, craftsmanship, and technical dedication that pays tribute to one of gaming’s most ambitious hardware concepts.
You can watch the full process and see the finished build in his video below.

Insanely good!
I love his projects and this is really next level stuff!
