SuperStation One: First Impressions and Overview – MiSTer FPGA

MiSTer FPGA

The SuperStation One, the latest MiSTer FPGA-based hardware developed by Retro Remake, has officially begun reaching the hands of early backers. First impressions from retail customers provide a detailed look at the final product’s build quality, performance, and out-of-the-box experience.

Build Quality and Design

The SuperStation One features a premium build with a distinct matte finish rather than a glossy one. The device is notably compact and incorporates a transparent shell that allows internal lighting to shine through, a feature particularly prominent in darker environments. The unit is designed for silent operation, as it utilizes passive cooling by default. While it lacks an internal fan in the base configuration, users have noted that the device remains quiet during operation, though it can become warm but not too hot. For those concerned about thermal management, active cooling fan module is available separately via the Retro Remake website.

Connectivity and Compatibility

The device is designed for versatility, supporting both modern and legacy displays. Testing has confirmed immediate compatibility with CRT monitors, functioning seamlessly upon connection. The hardware package includes several accessories:

  • A 64GB SD card pre-installed with necessary scripts.
  • An HDMI cable.
  • A USB-C power delivery cable (requiring a standard power adapter).

Software and User Experience

At launch, the SuperStation One comes pre-loaded with MiSTer scripts and licenced homebrew/indie games. However, it is important to note that the custom user interface previously showcased by Taki Udon is not included in the initial shipping models and is expected to be integrated in future updates. The device has been tested across various FPGA cores, showing stable performance with no reported issues in loading or running software.

Packaging and Presentation

The “Founders Edition” packaging is highly detailed, featuring artwork and references to various homebrew developers who collaborated on the project. The box provides a nostalgia kick to the original PlayStation box from back in the day.

As the first wave of units arrives globally, the SuperStation One appears to meet the expectations of the FPGA gaming community, offering a high-quality, “plug-and-play” entry point into the MiSTer ecosystem.
