PlayStation on Analogue Pocket, Updated with Big Gains….

Analogue Pocket FPGA Gaming PlayStation

…. But Still a Long Way to Go!!

FPGA core developer pgate1 has brought a Sony PlayStation core to the Analogue Pocket, something many considered impossible. That hasn’t stopped the developer from continuing to update the core, with the latest update released just a few hours ago.

You’ll find a list of changes below, and you can grab the latest revision from their GitHub.

Instruction Cache Correction and Texture Cache Addition:

  • The instruction cache has been fixed.
  • A texture cache has been added.

SDRAM Burst Transfer Implementation:

  • Implementing SDRAM burst transfer has improved the frame rate for games like Ridge Racer on the Pocket device.
  • Frame rate increased from 8 to 12 FPS.

Texture Cache Toggle:

  • The texture cache can be enabled or disabled by pressing the Select button.

Next Development Focus:

  • The primary goal is to address issues with movie skipping that currently prevent many games from being playable, despite the frame rate improvements.
  • The developer acknowledges that a dedicated movie decode circuit is not feasible and will be postponed.
