ModRetro has officially launched Wave 2 for its FPGA-powered handheld, the Chromatic. The new wave includes a restock of the handheld in multiple colors, as well as a fresh batch of original game cartridges developed specifically for the platform.

A Second Chance at the FPGA Handheld
The Chromatic originally launched earlier this year and gained attention for offering a non-emulated, cartridge-based handheld system built around FPGA technology. Inspired by the Game Boy Color in form and function, the Chromatic supports a growing library of new, original games released in physical format.
Under the hood, the handheld’s FPGA cores are based on adaptations of open-source MiSTer cores, allowing for highly accurate hardware-level compatibility. While the system does not support ROM loading, the use of proven FPGA architecture gives developers a predictable, low-latency platform to target.
Wave 2, which went live on July 10, 2025, included a restock of the handheld in seven colors, along with additional accessories and new cartridges.
What’s happening in Wave 2?
Wave 2 introduced the following key items:
- New hardware colorways, including “Frosted Lavender,” “Atomic Green,” and others.
- A restock of the original Chromatic handheld.
- A lineup of five new cartridge-based games:
- Wicked Plague – A roguelike with gothic visuals.
- First Contact Protocol – A turn-based tactics game with sci-fi elements.
- Sabrina: Zapped! – A side-scrolling action-platformer with light RPG mechanics.
- Gravitorque DX – A physics-based shooter.
- Self Simulated – A minimalistic platformer with narrative themes.
Each title is distributed on a physical cartridge with a boxed manual, in line with ModRetro’s retro-inspired approach to publishing.
Availability
As with the initial release, the Wave 2 products appear to be produced in limited quantities. Some items have already sold out, and it’s not yet confirmed whether there will be additional restocks or a Wave 3 with new titles.
Conclusion
With Wave 2, ModRetro continues to expand the Chromatic’s software library and hardware offerings. Its blend of cartridge-based gaming, FPGA accuracy, and MiSTer-derived core development sets it apart in the growing field of retro-modern handhelds. Whether it becomes a long-term fixture or remains a niche collector’s piece, the Chromatic is a awesome choice for those who grew up with the Game Boy (Color).
