Icepi Zero – A Tiny FPGA Board With Retro Gaming Potential

Other FPGA

The FPGA community has a new toy to get excited about. The Icepi Zero, a Raspberry Pi Zero-sized FPGA development board, has officially launched on Crowd Supply, and it’s already generating buzz.

Developed by cheyao, the Icepi Zero is a small but powerful FPGA board that packs almost all the ports you’d need for a retro gaming setup. According to its creator, it already supports multiple MiSTer cores — including Sega Master System, Oberon, C64, and Apple I — with the potential for even more in the future.

While it’s designed primarily for FPGA developers looking to create custom projects, the Icepi Zero’s compact size and versatility make it an attractive option for portable retro gaming. At just $69, it’s also one of the more affordable entries into the FPGA scene, though higher-end, polished solutions like the Game Bub remain better suited for those who want a ready-to-go experience.

With a familiar form factor, an ECP5 FPGA, and an open-source toolchain, this board is aimed squarely at enthusiasts who like to tinker, test, and build.
