Tang Retro Console: A Challenger Enters the FPGA Gaming Ring

The world of FPGA gaming has a new contender: the Tang Retro Console. This tiny device, from hardware company Sipeed, is aiming to make its mark with a modular design and an accessible price point. The question is, does it have what it takes to compete with established players like the MiSTer project? Especially given that the cost of entry via alternatives like the MiSTer Pi and the QMTECH MiSTer have made it a lot cheaper.

The video offers a look at the console’s different configurations, including the premium version which comes with a few accessories and a 3D-printed case. The hardware is described as having a modular design, featuring an all-in-one FPGA. It includes ports for HDMI and micro SD cards, as well as multiple USB ports.

The software, dubbed the Tang Core, is a text-based interface that is still a work in progress. While the UI has a few bugs, the core functionality seems to be running well. The video also touches on the current state of available cores and controller compatibility.

The most intriguing aspect may be its future potential. Its modular design suggests possibilities for different device form factors, and there’s a hint that a handheld version could be on the horizon. However, the video also notes that the community supporting the console is currently small.

For a full breakdown of the specs, a hands-on look at the user interface, and to see if this console is the right fit for your FPGA Gaming needs, you’ll wanna watch the full video.

I have the Tang Console 138K myself and have had some fun with it. I hope to revisit it once some new cores becomes available or existing ones get updated. check out the video below of live stream going through it’s available cores.
