We previously covered the announcement of this release, but at the time it was still unclear what exactly would be improved in this updated version of Final Fantasy VII. Now that it has officially launched on Steam, the details have been revealed.
Set in the dystopian city of Midgar, the story follows Cloud Strife, a former SOLDIER turned mercenary, who joins the eco-resistance group Avalanche in their fight against the Shinra Electric Power Company. As Shinra drains the planet’s life force, known as Mako energy, Cloud is drawn into an escalating conflict that forces him to confront his mysterious past. The story itself remains unchanged in this release.
This upgraded version is based on the 2013 PC edition and introduces several modern quality-of-life features:
- 3× Speed Mode, allowing players to accelerate battles, exploration, and certain events
- Option to disable random encounters, while keeping mandatory story battles intact
- Battle Enhancement Mode, restoring HP and MP instantly while maxing out the Limit gauge
- Autosave support
While there are no changes to the narrative or core content, these additions make replaying the game far more convenient.
For longtime fans and newcomers alike, this is another chance to experience one of the most influential RPGs ever made, now with smoother PC functionality and a few welcome modern touches.
