Duke Nukem 3D is about to receive one of its most ambitious fan upgrades yet. Modder Dan Peterson, also known as Cheello, has been working for over three years on a project that replaces nearly all of the game’s classic 2D sprites with fully-realized voxel models.
The mod, often referred to as Voxel Duke 3D, recreates almost a thousand objects, from weapons and enemies to environmental props, giving the Build engine shooter a fresh 3D look while staying true to its iconic 1996 style.
Cheello teased the project on social media with the message: “Over 3 years in the making. Nearly a thousand voxels. Coming soon.” No firm release date has been announced, but the mod is expected to be compatible with modern source ports such as EDuke32.
