The Game Boy classic Pokémon Red has received a massive overhaul with the release of Pokémon Red Expanded, a brand-new ROM hack by Iddiy. This hack takes the familiar journey through Kanto and supercharges it with modern mechanics, new Pokémon, and expanded post-game content.
Over 400 Pokémon are now catchable, alongside new moves, TMs, and items, bringing the game closer to later-generation experiences. A new battle facility allows players to test their skills in challenging 3v3 battles, while rematch teams for the Elite Four and Gym Leaders keep the adventure fresh. Features like infinite-use TMs, EVs and IVs, the physical/special split, modernized movesets, and even Hyper Training on Route 23 all give the game a contemporary feel without losing its retro charm.
Other quality-of-life additions include a reorganized bag with multiple pockets, smarter trainer AI, expanded naming options, and in-game trades that make version exclusives accessible. Nearly all known bugs have been fixed, and new Pokémon cries and updated visuals enhance the presentation.
