A new ROM hack titled Project Lost Bits gives players a look at what Super Mario Bros. might have looked like in its early prototype stages. Developed by KristalBaf, this fan project recreates elements from Nintendo’s original design drafts, early artwork, and planning sheets for the iconic NES platformer.
The hack restores an early title screen, color palette, and Mario sprites taken from official scans. It also introduces changes like Koopas replacing Goombas, modified stage layouts inspired by development notes, and redesigned sprites for Bowser, Toad, and Peach that match their early concept versions.
