SNES Rumble – Roundup

Romhacks Games SNES

Its been an exciting time for SNES fans – Randy Linden and Limited Run Games not only boasted new technology for the upcoming DOOM remaster to include actual rumble feedback on a brand new controller, they actively reached out to romhackers such as myself to make sure that this could be used by EVERYBODY.

We were given source code examples, documentation, and some of us were even provided with prototype pads to quickly get more games to support this tech.

Emulators and MiSTerFPGA quickly adopted this new tech, with Mesen 2.1.1+ and ARES on-board, and upcoming one day on the MiSTer update-all (right now its on the unstable core) to allow anyone with ANY USB gamepad, such as an XBOX controller, to experience the tech right now!

I’ve had the pleasure of being involved in and creating some of these hacks, so here’s a current roundup of whats available, who’s made it, and where you can get it!

Starfox – Shindou Edition

The first romhack to add rumble features, the setup was initially constructed by SunlitSpace542 with direct help from Randy Linden. Eventually I figured out a method to add rumble tables to this game as well.

This is a very immersive rumble experience, doing left/right side rumbles when you get hit on those sides, immersive rumble for some cutscenes, and all in all you can feel the gameplay like you’re in the cockpit!

Super Metroid – Rumbled

This project started with a simple proof of concept that I created – rumbling when you shoot. I reached out to the Super Metroid modding community and ended up linking together with InsaneFirebat, who just so happened to have created the decomp that I was working off of!

Needless to say, the end result is a finely polished, immersive, exciting rumble experience that makes the game worth playing over again!

Super Mario Kart – Rumble Version

Created after I sufficently nagged enough, icesan made possibly one of the most complex rumble systems thus far. Unsurprising considering the pure talent this individual has; he understands the source code like its first grade math.

With options to have the engine rumbling or not, this project is far from completed and only serves as a reminder of how great things can get with rumble!

Super Mario World Rumbled

A project that surprisingly nobody else wanted to take up, this ended up one of my favorite projects! over 30 rumble tables have been applied to numerous sound effects to create quite an immersive experience, with some effects strobing across the pad back and forth, sound effects you can FEEL, and a much more satisfying cutscene destroying the koopalings castles.

Super Castlevania IV (Rumble)

Another project I nudged into existence, bogaa takes his knowledge of this game and implemented some beautiful rumble effects, giving this game another chance at life.

This project is still under development, and is currently at version 0.3.

Final Fantasy III/VI Rumble

A small love letter to this amazing RPG, immersive effects have been added to every spell, esper, etc. Haptic feedback added to menus, immersive rumbling flying the airship, and of course rumbling during screen shaking events!

You’ve never felt the world of ruin come alive like this!

Attack of the PETSCII Robots – Rumble Support

A fun little homebrew, this was a project by SunlitSpace542 to see if he could easily insert rumble into a game he had no source code for.

As you can tell, it was a success!
