One of Akihabara’s most iconic arcades, GiGO Akihabara Building 1, will officially close on August 31, 2025, ending a 33-year run in the heart of Tokyo’s gaming district.
From Sega to GiGO
Originally opened in 1992 as Hi-Tech Land Sega Shintoku, the venue later became Club Sega and eventually rebranded as GiGO in 2022, following SEGA’s withdrawal from the arcade business. The closure is due to the expiration of a fixed-term lease and is not tied to financial performance.
What Happens Next
According to Japanese gaming news outlet GAME Watch, the building will be repurposed by a different operator, with more details expected later. In the meantime, GiGO Akihabara Buildings 2, 3, and 5 will continue operations.
