Pokémon: Sour Crystal, created by SourApple, aims to refine and enhance the original Pokémon Crystal experience while staying true to the classic Gen 2 feel that many players know and love.
This updated build, now at version 5.5a, brings a wealth of improvements and tweaks designed to make the journey through Johto smoother and more rewarding. From over 200 custom Pokémon sprites to a fully functional Safari Zone with four distinct biomes, the amount of polish and content is impressive.
Other highlights include:
- A Challenge Mode option at the start of the game
- Weather effects throughout the overworld
- Party stats updated to match Gen 9 standards
- An overhauled trainer rematch system for better grinding
- QoL improvements like reusable TMs, instant Apricorn Balls, and a pager system that removes the need for HM slaves
- A revamped PC box system that eliminates the need for manual saving when switching boxes
- Support for post-game Pokémon like Houndour and Slugma in Johto
Kanto has also been restored to its Gen 1 size, including many of the classic cut areas, and HGSS-exclusive routes and trainers have been ported over. There’s even a Linking Cord item to handle trade evolutions without the hassle of external trading.
Notably, this hack avoids going beyond the Gen 2 roster, meaning no Gen 3+ Pokémon, no fakemon, and no beta Pokémon, keeping the experience authentic while fixing many of the quirks of the original.
For anyone looking to relive the magic of Pokémon Crystal with modernized mechanics and thoughtful updates, Pokémon: Sour Crystal is definitely worth a playthrough.
