Mighty Final Fight Forever: A Fanmade Revival for Metro City

Uncategorized

A dedicated fan project titled Mighty Final Fight Forever is in development, serving as a spiritual successor and fanmade sequel to Capcom’s 1993 Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) spin-off, Mighty Final Fight.

Set in 1997, four years after the defeat of the Mad Gear Gang’s former leader Belger, the game’s story sees Mayor Mike Haggar, along with Cody and Guy, return to the crime-ridden streets of Metro City to confront a new criminal syndicate.

The project is currently offering a demo and is planned for a future full release.

About the Original Games

Final Fight (1989)

  • Release: Originally an arcade beat ’em up by Capcom, released in November 1989 (Japan).
  • Gameplay: The game established the franchise’s core beat ’em up mechanics, featuring an eight-way joystick for movement and separate buttons for attacking and jumping.
  • Plot: The game’s narrative centers on Mayor Mike Haggar, Cody Travers, and Guy fighting the Mad Gear Gang to rescue Haggar’s daughter and Cody’s girlfriend, Jessica Haggar.
  • Development History: Final Fight was initially conceived as a sequel to Street Fighter under the working title Street Fighter ’89, but was renamed after its genre was switched from a fighting game to a beat ’em up.
  • Legacy: It became a significant commercial success in arcades and is considered a “cousin” of the Street Fighter series, with both set in the same universe (Metro City).

Mighty Final Fight (1993)

  • Release: A spin-off released for the 8-bit NES console in 1993.
  • Art Style: A notable feature is its unique “super deformed” or “chibi” art style, where the characters are depicted with comical, childlike proportions.
  • Roster: Unlike the original Super NES port of Final Fight, Mighty Final Fight retained all three playable characters from the arcade version: Cody, Guy, and Haggar.
  • New Feature: It introduced an Experience Points (EXP) system, similar to the NES port of Double Dragon. Defeating enemies grants EXP, allowing characters to level up, which increases their attack power, maximum vitality, and unlocks additional special attacks at higher levels (Level 4).

Mighty Final Fight Forever Features

The fan project aims to expand upon the 8-bit spin-off with extensive new and remade content:

  • Story & Characters: A whole new story is included, alongside the original main characters (Mike Haggar, Cody, Guy) with redesigned looks and new moves.
  • Roster Expansion: The game will feature new playable characters.
  • Visual & Audio: New color palettes are collected from other Final Fight games. It will feature a remade original soundtrack plus new tracks.
  • Levels & Enemies: The game will include original and new enemies, redesigned with new moves. It features completely remade original levels, remade levels from other Final Fight games, and entirely new stages.
  • Gameplay Additions: New weapons and special attacks will be available. The game promises several ways to go through and finish the game.
  • Modes: The project is planned to include 2 players mode, Retro mode, and an Arena mode.
